Proposal to rename parkways and park roads containing the name “Calhoun”
At its meeting on May 15, 2019, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board of Commissioners took the first steps toward renaming parkways and park roads containing the name “Calhoun.” The Board action, Resolution 2019-209, would amend Chapter 9, Article X of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Code of Ordinances to rename the following:
- Calhoun Boulevard West to Bde Maka Ska Boulevard West
- Calhoun Drive to Bde Maka Ska Drive
- East Lake Calhoun Parkway to East Bde Maka Ska Parkway
- West Lake Calhoun Parkway to West Bde Maka Ska Parkway
Resolution 2019-209 passed out of the Administration and Finance Committee of the Board of Commissioners on May 15, 2019. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board will accept comments online during a public comment period that ends July 1, 2019.
Comments will be collated and summarized for the Board of Commissioners as part of a public hearing on August 7, 2019, 6:30 pm in the Board Room at Mary Merrill Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Headquarters, 2117 West River Road, Minneapolis, MN, 55411.
Members of the public who desire to speak at the public hearing are encouraged to sign up before 4:30 pm on August 7 by calling 612-230-6400 or emailing email@example.com. After 4:30 pm on August 7, people can sign up to speak in person at a table outside of the Board Room.
According to parkway/park road renaming procedure, two readings of the ordinance amendment are required. The first reading will be at the Board of Commissioners meeting on August 7, 2019 and the second reading will be at the Board of Commissioners meeting on August 21, 2019. Both meetings will be held in the Board Room at Mary Merrill Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Headquarters.
