Get information about removing EAB-infested ash trees on residential properties

The MPRB recognizes the need to better inform the public about the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and the infestation of ash trees in Minneapolis by this invasive beetle, which began in 2010.

In addition to website updates, it has planned a series of public meetings this April where residents and property owners can learn about the impact of EAB, specifically:

  • Why Minnesota’s ash trees are dying and need to be removed
  • How the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) has been working on the problem
  • What to expect for tree removal costs and payment options, including financial hardship options

Background on EAB and Infested Trees

Because EAB eventually kills all ash trees, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) implemented an Ash Canopy Replacement Plan from 2014 through 2022 to replace all public ash trees with a diverse mix of new trees. Under state and local laws, the MPRB is responsible for management of infested trees on both public and private property in Minneapolis.

As the population of EAB continues to grow, its impact is becoming increasingly evident on private properties. This has resulted in a corresponding increase in the condemnation of infested ash trees on private properties.
