Visit the Wirth Winter Recreation Area and you'll quickly forget you're in the city. This 700-acre urban forest is a winter sports-lover's paradise! The Wirth Winter Recreation Area at Theodore Wirth Park offers cross-country skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowshoeing, skijoring, cycling, walking/running trails, birthday parties, and more!

Don't have your own gear? Need a lesson? We have everything you need to get outside and enjoy the beauty and fun of winter right in the heart of Minneapolis.

After a day in the snow, warm up and refuel at the bar and grill inside the Wirth Chalet, which offers sandwiches, hot dogs, soup, snacks, and beverages, plus free wireless Internet.

Whether you want to get out and cross-country ski, hike the trails, or just absorb the views, the Wirth Winter Recreation Area has it all!

The Wirth Winter Recreation Area is open on Minneapolis school release days in January and February including Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and President's Day. Kids can enjoy winter fun all day long by attending our School's Out Camps.

Cross Country Skiing

The Wirth Winter Recreation Area offers 15 miles (25 km) of cross-country ski trails that are groomed daily for both classical style and skate cross-country skiing, depending on conditions.

The cross-country ski trails connect to 5 additional miles of groomed Chain of Lakes trails, allowing you to ski from Golden Valley to Uptown!

Snowboarding

Head to the Wirth Winter Recreation Area for everything from lessons by a veteran trained staff for beginners, to a snowboard park with advanced technical rails and jumps.

Snow Tubing

Wirth Winter Recreation Area offers a snow tubing hill complete with a tow rope, and our own specially designed tubes to make getting up the hill quick, comfortable and fun!

Nighttime lighting and snowmaking machine keep the excitement going all winter long!

Bring your own snowshoes, or rent a pair of lightweight aluminum snowshoes in the Wirth Chalet for walking, hiking and running through the Wirth Winter Recreation Area!

Weddings at the Wirth Chalet

The Clubhouse at Theodore Wirth Park is modeled after a Swiss Chalet and is available for rentals such as wedding receptions and other parties of up to 150 people. The Fireplace Room has a vaulted ceiling, large wood burning fireplace and the warm feeling of a rustic lodge. Walking & Running Trails

Enjoy the beauty along the designated winter walking route in the Eloise Butler area. Also explore over 50 miles of plowed trails along the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, the longest continuous system of public urban parkways in the nation!

Off-Road Cycling

Bike all winter long at our off-road cycling trail. The 4.36-mile trail twists and climbs its way through a wooded, hilly section of Wirth Park east of Twin Lakes, north of Highway 55, and west of the Wirth Par 3 Golf course.

Skijoring

Head out for some exercise with your four-legged friend this winter! Skijoring is available in the Front-9 and in the J.D. Rivers/Wirth Lake areas. For safety reasons, skijoring is not allowed on the remainder of the Theodore Wirth trails.
