Kites of all colors, sizes, shapes and themes will fly over the frozen Lake Harriet from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at the ninth annual Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival. The festival is held on the north end of the lake near the band shell at 4135 W. Lake Harriet Parkway.
Minnesota Kite Society experts will demonstrate their skills maneuvering spectacular kites and help newer kite fliers. Participants can bring their own kites or buy an inexpensive one at the lake. Events include horse and wagon rides, ice fishing, snowshoeing, a kids' scavenger hunt and a marshmallow roast.
Sponsors include Lyndale Farmstead Park, Linden Hills Neighborhood Council, Minnesota Kite Society, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' “Fishing in the Neighborhood” and “Minnaqua,” Take Me Fishing, and the East Harriet Farmstead Neighborhood Association
In case of extreme weather or poor ice conditions, the event will be re-scheduled for Jan. 17.
