Celebrate the holidays; enjoy winter at neighborhood rec centers
 
Check out your Minneapolis neighborhood recreation center this winter for family-friendly programs and events. From making gingerbread houses and breakfasts with Santa to ice skating and science nights, many events are free or have a nominal fee.

Audubon Park – Upper Northeast Parks Brunch with Santa, Saturday, Dec. 19, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Joint party with Northeast, Waite and Windom NE parks. Art activity, entertainment, all-you-can-eat pancake feast; $4, children 12 and under; $6, adults; must pre-register online at www.minneapolisparks.org – Recreation Centers – Audubon Park, in person or by phone at any of those parks; registration begins Monday, Nov. 23; deadline is 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11. Brackett Park
• Family Holiday Brunch at Longfellow Park, Saturday, Dec. 12, 10 a.m.-noon. – See Longfellow Park listing.
• New Year’s Eve Party, Thursday, Dec. 31, 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. – For ages 6-12 years; art projects, movies, music, dancing, countdown, lunch; $10; register by Monday, Dec. 14.

Hiawatha School Park

Linden Hills Park
• Gingerbread House-Making, Saturday, Dec. 5, 11 am-12:30 p.m.; $7; must pre-register.
• Winter Fest ’10, Friday, Feb. 5, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Ice skating, music, roast marshmallows, refreshments; free. (Postponed from Jan. 29 due to cold weather).

Logan Park
• Holiday Cookie Baking, Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2-4 p.m. Bake your favorite holiday cookies and bring some home for the family; for ages 6-12; free; register online at www.minneapolisparks.oeg – Recreation Centers – Logan Park or at the park.
• Ice Skating Party, Friday, Jan. 8, 6-8 p.m. Bonfire, hot chocolate, treats, art project, snowshoeing; co-sponsored with Logan Park Neighborhood Association; free.
• Cinderella Ball, Saturday, Jan. 23, 6-7:30 p.m. A parent/child event (ages 2-7 years) at Columbia Manor, 3300 Central Ave. NE; limit two adults per family. Wear royal ball attire and dance into a fairy tale; pictures with Cinderella, create prince or princess crown. Space is limited; registrations will be taken online at www.minneapolisparks.oeg – Recreation Centers – Logan Park, in person or by phone until Jan. 20 or until event is full; $8.

Longfellow Park
• Holiday Light Tour, Saturday, Dec. 5, 3-8 p.m. Homemade dinner with holiday entertainment followed by coach bus tour of holiday lights in the Twin Cities; $23 per person; register by Nov. 28 online www.minneapolisparks.org – Recreation Centers – Longfellow Park or in person at the park. Space is limited so register early.
• Family Holiday Brunch, Saturday, Dec. 12, 10 a.m.-noon. Joint party with Matthews, Brackett and Hiawatha School parks. Brunch, entertainment and a special visitor; $4; 12 months or younger free; pre-register by Dec. 7 at a participating park.

Luxton Park – Holiday Joy, Saturday, Dec. 12, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. – Parents, drop off your kids so you can finish that last-minute holiday prep. Matthews Park

• Kids Night Out*, Monday, Dec, 14, 6-8:45 p.m. Parents can drop off the kids then take care of last-minute holiday errands and shopping. Activities include dinner, movie or other activity; $7 per child; register by Dec. 7.
• Holiday Baking Class*, Monday, Dec. 21, 6:30-8 p.m. Make, decorate and munch on easy-to-make but delicious holiday cookies; $5 per child; register by Dec. 14.

McRae Park

• Baking Holiday Goodies, Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1-4 p.m. Help staff make batches of holiday goodies; take some home to share; $5.
• Ice Skating Fun at McRae Park, Saturday, Dec. 26, noon-4 p.m.; free.
• Friday Night Skate & Bonfire, Fridays, Jan. 8 and 22, 6-8 p.m. Ice skating, bonfire, marshmallow roast; free.

Nokomis Park – The Night Before New Year’s Eve Party, Wednesday, Dec. 30, 5-8 p.m. Carnival games, face-painting, storytelling, crafts, jazz music, chilidog dinner, hayride, marshmallows by the fire, dance music by KidsDance DJ; countdown to 2010 at 8 p.m.; free, donations appreciated; co-sponsored with Nokomis East Neighborhood Association. Northeast Park

Pearl Park

• Holiday Design for Adults with Susan Wilkins. Thursday, Dec. 17, 7-8:30 p.m.; $20; register by Monday, Dec. 14.
