Get ready for winter trails – safely!

It’s cold and the day light is getting shorter, but don’t let that deter you from enjoying the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board’s (MPRB) 50-plus miles of trails and pathways. Breathe in the fresh, crisp air, and explore nature you might not otherwise notice in summer’s foliage.

To make your excursion along Minneapolis paths and trails enjoyable, here are some basic winter rules of etiquette and safety tips.
• Run or walk slower than you would in fair conditions and be aware of the path, its condition (e.g. ice, slush, packed snow) and where you are going.
• Wear light-colored or reflective clothing if you go at night.
• Have light on your bicycle at night. It is a good idea for walkers, runners and skate skiers, too.
• Dress in layers.
• Wear shoes or boots with good traction.
• Wear bright colors if it is snowing or raining.
• Don’t wear headsets; use your ears to be aware of your surroundings.
• Don't just assume that people will see you.
• Be aware of cars and other vehicles around you.
• Be careful when crossing streets; even if a car should stop or is starting to stop, they may not stop in time in icy or wet weather.
• Be aware of the weather conditions (e.g. temperature, wind, precipitation).

Winter Trail Maintenance
MPRB clears snow from the bicycle path in the winter. During this time, the bicycle path becomes a combined path for cyclists and pedestrians. . However, there may be icy conditions due to weather conditions and the high volume of foot/bike traffic that packs down snow before plows can remove it. The MPRB applies sand to reduce icy conditions. The Park Board does not use salt on its trails to prevent damage to adjacent turf and nearby lakes, creeks and rivers.

General Safety Tips
There are also general safety tips to keep in mind year round:
• When using a park pathway, keep to the right unless overtaking or passing another user going in the same direction.
• Bikers are prohibited from using pathways carelessly or in disregard for the safety of others. Do not ride faster than 10 mph or faster than is wise under the conditions.
• Bike paths at Lake Harriet, Lake Calhoun and Lake of the Isles are one-way.
• Exercise in pairs or with a leashed dog when jogging or walking in the parks.
• Tell a reliable person the route you plan to take and when you expect to be back.
• Runners and walkers should exercise in well-populated areas during daylight hours. Carry personal identification and an effective sound-making device.
