Located on Farwell Place between Sheridan Ave. N and Thomas Ave. N, Farwell Park is in the Willard-Hay neighborhood, just a few blocks east from Bassett’s Creek and the Theodore Wirth Golf Club.
Farwell Park’s totlot playground and open play field are popular attractions for kids, and the picnic tables and bulletin board announcing community events make the park a neighborhood gathering place. Nearby parks include Williard Park, Lovell Square Park and North Commons Park, which features a Recreation Center offering youth programs and other activities.
Acquired in 1910, Farwell Park’s development is unique in that it was landscaped by a private company; most parks dating from that era were designed by Theodore Wirth. Initially the park was more of a green space than a playground; the first playground equipment was installed in 1968, and renovated in 2001.
Historical Profile: More information about this and other parks is included in Parks, Lakes, Trails and So Much More, a richly detailed account of the histories of Minneapolis’ renown recreational system.
