The John H. Stevens House, built in 1849 near St. Anthony Falls, has the distinction of being the first wood frame dwelling built west of the Mississippi. It was in this house that the name ''Minneapolis'' was suggested and the government structure for Hennepin County established.
The John H. Stevens House is owned and maintained by the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board; the programs, tours and general operations are provided and managed by a volunteer community board.
Regular guided tours of the John H. Stevens House Museum, birthplace of Minneapolis, are noon-4 p.m. Sundays and holidays Memorial Day through mid-September. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children.
The House is located in Minnehaha Falls Park conveniently across from the 50th St. LRT station. For information about special small group tours and upcoming special events, call 612-722-2220 or go to www.johnhstevenshouse.org
Historical Profile: More information about this and other parks is included in Parks, Lakes, Trails and So Much More, a richly detailed account of the histories of Minneapolis’ renown recreational system. (See Minnehaha Park section.)
