ABOUT COMMISSIONER KUMMER
GOALS
In the time I have served as commissioner for the 5th Park District, I have been the personal point of contact between citizens, the Board and the staff helping solve problems and answer questions for those who call me. I also have positive, working relationships throughout the community and at all levels of government, which helps me be an effective advocate for our parks.
The most important function of our Park System is that it serves our citizens today and in the future. It's a 127-year-old treasure that must be protected and maintained. The parks provide a natural environment in an urban landscape, a place for kids to play and learn, for everyone to walk, run or simply sit on a park bench to watch the creek or the river run by. Parks are where we learn to appreciate nature and come together as a community.
BACKGROUND
Carol Kummer was born in North Dakota and moved to St. Cloud at age 12 where she graduated from Technical High School. She is now deeply rooted in South Minneapolis living in the same home for 42 years. She raised four children who attended grade schools in the Nokomis East neighborhood. All four graduated from Roosevelt High; two are U of M graduates. Kummer discovered politics as a result of her membership in the Keewaydin PTA, became active in the DFL and has held many positions within the DFL. While she has worked on numerous campaigns through the years, the Park Board was her first campaign for elective office.
