The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board performs its many duties through the contributions of our elected Commissioners and hired Superintendent. Their actions are guided according to the following roles and responsibilities.
Commissioners
The voters of the City of Minneapolis elect the nine Commissioners during the General Election every four years.
- Three are elected at-large
- Six are elected from geographically based park districts
Commissioners are responsible for:
- Developing park policies; and
- Enacting ordinances governing the use of neighborhood and regional parks, parkways, beaches and lakes, and special use facilities such as pools, ice arenas and municipal golf courses.

Superintendent of Parks
- Hired by Board of Commissioners
- Supervises approximately 600 permanent year-round and 1,500 part-time staff.
- Along with staff is responsible for maintaining and developing the Minneapolis park system, providing comprehensive services and recreation programs that meet the needs of all Minneapolis citizens, policing of park properties and maintenance of street trees.
