| Earth Day Watershed Cleanup 2009 |
By nature (pun intended!) parks are an important component of sustainable lifestyles. Boulevard trees help cool houses in the summer. Natural areas protect shoreline areas from erosion, and reduce maintenance costs and the use of chemicals and fossil fuels.
Whether it’s safe-guarding a century-old wildflower garden or volunteers cleaning up the parks on Earth Day, sustainability efforts are rooted in the very beginning of the Minneapolis Park System. In the 1870’s Charles Loring, the “Father of Minneapolis Parks,” and renown landscape architect Horace Cleveland were already working side by side to establish Minneapolis as one of the greenest cities in the U.S.
Today, sustainable practices are evident in the MPRB’s day-to-day programming and operations, from Arbor Day and organic gardening to use of hybrid vehicles and solar panels. See how!
Events & Programming – Maintaining the urban forest, composting food waste
Operations – Organic gardening, solar panels
