Michael Hinton


Michael Hinton, Minneapolis First Tee Executive Director, PGA Golf Instructor

Michael is the Director of Golf Instruction for the The First Tee of Minneapolis and is responsible for developing and leading the instructional programs for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Entering his 17th year as a PGA Golf Pro, Michael is an in-demand golf coach and owner of the Minneapolis Golf Academy. Michael exclusively uses the V1 Digital Coaching System that allows his students to track their swings year-to-year, and to make correct swing modifications based on their individual needs. Michael also specializes in team building clinics, lessons, and golf days for corporations.


Jeff Sorenson, PGA Golf Instructor


Jeff Sorenson, PGA Teaching Professional

Jeff is entering his 15th year as a PGA Golf Professional. Jeff is an accomplished player amassing 95 professional victories, five of them Minnesota Majors including three wins in the Minnesota PGA Championship. Jeff was awarded the Minnesota PGA Player of the Year in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012. Twice Jeff has finished in third place for the National PGA Player of the Year award. Jeff qualified and played in the PGA Championships in 2011 and 2013. Jeff uses video analysis in all of his lessons, but focuses more on kinesthetic or feel approach to help students identify and grasp changes needed in their game. In addition to teaching at Columbia, Jeff is available for lessons at Gross National and Hiawatha golf courses.


Grant Shafranski


Grant Shafranski, Program Director of The First Tee of Minneapolis
Hiawatha Learning Center

Grant is a Teaching Professional at Hiawatha and Program Director of The First Tee of Minneapolis. He spent four seasons at The Minikahda Club teaching men, women, and junior golfers of all levels. Entering his third season as a member of the Minnesota Section PGA, Grant joined the teaching profession after a highly successful amateur career where he earned All-American honors while captaining the University of St. Thomas golf team and won a Wisconsin state golf championship. Grant believes in teaching students not how to replicate PGA Tour players, but how to take and improve their individual swing and increase the player’s enjoyment of the game. He makes students feel comfortable with a light-hearted, positive, and encouraging attitude. Off the course he studies swings and theories to better serve his students with individualized lessons. He tracks each lesson using V1 Golf technology in order to trace student improvement year-to-year.


Erik Toftner, PGA Golf Instructor


Erik Toftner, PGA Golf Instructor
Meadowbrook Golf Course

Erik Toftner is entering his 17th year as a PGA Golf Professional. Erik attended Scottsdale Community College on a golf scholarship and worked at several golf schools in Arizona before becoming a PGA certified instructor. Erik started his professional teaching career at Hillcrest and Mendakota Country Club prior to joining the professional golf staff at the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Erik is a well-known leader in the junior golf community giving his personal attention to students to identify what they need to bring their game to the next level. Erik uses video analysis in his lessons and works with all levels of golfers including beginners and advanced players.


Stefani Zappa


Stefani Zappa, First Tee Coach

Stefani comes to us from Augsburg College where she ended her career as one of the top women's golfers in Augsburg history. Zappa finished her playing career third on the college's all-time list with an 88.90 career stroke average, with five medalist honors and nine top-10 finishes in 29 career meets. All four of her single-season stroke averages rank among the top 23 in school history. Zappa was a two-season captain and two-time team Most Valuable Player. She will be very involved in developing the girls programs and opportunities in the city.



Cory Capitani, PGA Apprentice
Hiawatha Learning Center

Cory began his golf career as a volunteer with the First Tee of Minneapolis. Cory graduated from Northern Michigan University. He is now enrolled as a PGA apprentice and working towards his PGA membership. Cory is currently working as a First Coach at Hiawatha Golf Course and Learning Center.
