October 2021: Major Updates at MPRB Recreation Centers

A Baker’s Dozen And Counting! Major Updates at MPRB Recreation Centers

During its first five years the NPP20 initiative has funded roof replacements, restroom overhauls, and/or other major renovations at 13 recreation centers: Audubon, Bryant, Farview, Fuller, Kenwood, Logan, Lyndale Farmstead, Luxton, Matthews, Painter, Phillips and Whittier.

This is in addition to dozens of other recreation centers seeing other ongoing, NPP20-funded repairs and upgrades, ranging from furnace replacements to lighting to accessibility improvements. At this rate, every recreation center in the neighborhood park system should see renovations or upgrades during the two decades of NPP20 funding.

Logan Recreation Center Updates

Thanks to NPP20 rehabilitation funding, the Logan Recreation Center has been undergoing a range of repairs, replacements and upgrades over the past year and a half, with work done by MPRB Trades staff and contractors.

Similar to Farview Recreation Center, the whole benefit of this the extensive slate of improvements at Logan is much greater than the sum of its parts. The recreation center improvements, expected to wrap up in 2021 or winter 2022, include:

  • Roof replaced in 2020
  • Interior renovations to both large and small kitchens and the art room: kitchen appliances, countertops, cabinetry and flooring, plus upgraded plumbing
  • Major lounge/lobby renovation with new flooring and central reception desk; in the works are furniture, carpets, foosball and bumper pool tables and program screens (to highlight programs, activities, schedules, etc.)
  • Gym renovations: ceiling repairs, lighting; clean/wax floor and striping for pickle ball. Logan recreation center lobby

October 2018: Building rehabilitation projects

Bossen Field Park Building
Work on a range of repairs and upgrades should be completed by the end of the month. These include repairs to the building exterior, accessibility improvements to the restrooms and the addition of a new, single-use accessible restroom. Security improvements include upgraded lighting and the addition of cameras and a keyless door entry system.

The final element for this project involves the water line to the building, which requires full replacement despite multiple repairs in recent years, due to ongoing deterioration. With bidding and contracting through the Target Market Program occuring this month, the goal is to have a contractor complete the replacement this fall.

Painter Recreation Center
This location closes in late October for a major rehabilitation project. Upgrades and improvements to be made are noted in signs used for an open-house event, which were left up afterward to inform recreation center users. It’s hoped that they will also build anticipation for the center’s re-opening, currently planned for February 2019.

Kenwood Recreation Center
During its building-wide rehabilitation this summer, floors, ceilings and lighting were replaced due to asbestos abatement. A new staff desk and automated entry make the center more accessible to everyone; and the kitchen has a fully functional sink, thanks to the long-needed replacement of a collapsed underground pipe.
